The Ultimate Guide to Student Freebies

As students, we are well known for asking about discounts in shops, with a smile and a flash of the student card. But what other ways are there to get discounts and even freebies, while living on a tight student budget? Here’s our list of student freebies and some of the best methods we have found to save your cash…

The most obvious discount card for students, the NUS Extra card offers various savings at many high street stores, restaurants and even money off Virgin Experience Days. 40% off Pizza Express on Mondays and Tuesdays is one of the best deals on offer, so grab your mates and get your meal for less. Always be aware of the small print however; sale items in stores and drinks in restaurants are often excluded. The card costs £12, however if you open a Lloyd’s student account then you get one free for 3 years, so even better- discounts without any cost! A free alternative is the Unidays app, offering some competing discounts, without having to pay the £12 fee.

Freshers Fair
The freshers fair is simply just a massive freebie giveaway. From enough pens for an entire year to tasty pizza, everyone knows how to get student folk to sign up to their email list (P.S. you will be getting spammed about every far-flung society into third year, so set up an email dedicated to receiving these spam emails if don’t already have one). More rogue items I’ve heard about being handed out are wooden spoons, beer pong sets and even branded socks. My personal fave has to be the cringe advertising posters for the local clubs, which you can now proudly display on your bedroom wall.

Store Points Cards
Fill your wallet with free store points cards, such as Boots Advantage Card, Superdrug Beauty Card and Nectar Card, then fantasise about the day when you actually have saved enough to treat yourself. Once signed up to these cards, they can periodically send you money saving vouchers as well, so these bits of plastic can actually give you more perks than you initially might think. Their old fashioned alternative – the paper stamp card – is just as good and appears mainly in coffee shops, such as Caffe Nero, where buying nine hot drinks will get you one free.

Photo Prints

Any student room is not complete without photos, whether that be of family or pets to keep homesickness at bay in freshers or embarrassing pics of drunken housemates to remind you of the good times of uni whilst having an essay crisis. There are always promotions, so you only have to pay p&p; a collection of the best deals are found here with up to 75 free photos sent to your door.

Free Microsoft Office for Students
A lot of unis have signed up for you to get Microsoft Office for free, and you may not even know it…the first thing to do is to check your academic email address to see if you can add the key programmes to your laptop without the expensive price-tag.
